Carp Anglers Group First Fishing Folly (FFF 2016) begins at midnight on January 1, 2016 This is just a reminder that the national carping organization, Carp Anglers Group (CAG), will be hosting its thirteenth First Fishing Folly (FFF) during the first 24 hours of 2016. The FFF is a CAG-members-only, one-day event that awards 46 bait and tackle gift certificates and recognition for categories ranging from first fish to big fish to total weight to big mirror to smallest fish, etc. Click here for more details. Camaraderie and a holiday spirit are hallmarks of December 12, 2015 event at Joliet, IL "Sam Snow Memorial Holiday Carp Tournament" Saturday, December 12, 2015 Jackson Street Venue - Joliet, IL Record warmth for mid-December in northern Illinois combined with a truly amiable holiday spirit made the December 12, 2015 “Sam Snow Memorial” Holiday Carp Tournament in Joliet seem more like a social fish-in than an actual contest. Or, perhaps it was the fact that we were all in close proximity to one another at the Jackson St. venue. Or, perhaps it was the fact that the holiday spirit had many participants donating prizes and food. Or, perhaps it was the fact that we were honoring the memory of Sam Snow (complete with Larry Seeman donating and ceremoniously emptying a 40 ouncer into the DesPlaines River). No matter what the reason, it was a most enjoyable day even though not many carp joined the party. Nine anglers were present for the 6:30 a.m. peg choice procedure, and those choices were made in the following order: Fred Rhodes - peg 1 Eddie Cobb - peg 2 Chuck Ferczok - peg 3 Cory Bohmann - peg 9 Chris Reitan - peg 4 Jesus Gonzales - peg 10 Larry Seeman - Peg 6 Chad Bettisch - peg 5 Frank Rink - peg 14. The spirit of the holidays was most definitely present as several “special prizes” and “services” were donated by participants: We were never hungry! Larry Seeman generously donated and cooked breakfast and lunch for all anglers and several visitors who stopped by throughout the day. Everything was delicious! Larry Seeman also donated a “Surprise Bucket” for the first carp caught. The bucket held items worth $50+, including a $25 McDonald’s gift certificate, soft-sided lunch container, bait, first-aid kit, and a Gamma-seal lid. Chad Bettisch donated a packet of new 3M products for small fish of the day. Cory Bohmann donated a Brita pitcher for fish closest in weight to the date of the event (12-12). Mrs. Nanette Wells, through Fred Rhodes, donated her late husband Paul’s set of Fox EOS alarms and remote for last carp of the day. Frank Rink made his usual donations of tackle and bait for 4th through last place finishers. Jim Rink made his usual donations of beverage holders, caps, and koozies for 4th through last place finishers. It was overcast for most of the day with an occasional fine drizzle, but the 50-60 degree temperatures made fishing pleasant, especially for a December outing. We should be so lucky for the upcoming CAG First Fishing Folly (FFF 2016) on January 1. Fishing at Joliet this past fall has been tough, but we always seem to have at least three anglers catch fish! Chuck Ferczok worked hard at peg 3, and he finished the day in the money with $50 and a medal for his 3rd place fish weighing 4-9. His single 4-9 carp also won Chuck the Chad Bettisch 3M products package for small fish of the day. At noon, anglers were allowed to move to any unoccupied peg from among the 35 available at our Joliet venue. Cory Bohmann made a wise choice and moved from peg 9 at Jackson Street to peg 9 near the Bicentennial Park fountain. Cory captured two fish (8-11 and 5-13) at his p.m. location to take 2nd place ($85 and medal) in the tournament with a 14-8 total. Cory’s 5-15, captured late in the day, also won the “Mystery Prize” of Fox EOS alarms and remote donated by Nanette Wells and brought to the event by Fred Rhodes. Frank Rink had last peg choice, so he was forced to be away from his preferred pegs 1, 2, 3, 4, and to take a location in the Jackson venue mulch at peg 14. That forced, but lucky, choice proved fortuitous as Frank finished the event with the following awards: First place in the Big 4 tournament ($135 and medal) with catches of 16-0, 13-13, 11-3 (pictured), and 5-15 totaling 46-15. Big carp of the tournament (16-0) and the related $45 side pot. Most carp of the tournament (4) and the related $45 side pot. First carp of the day (5-15 at 7:30 a.m.) and the “First Fish Surprise Bucket” donated by Larry Seeman. Carp closest to 12-12 (13-13) and the Brita pitcher donated by Cory Bohmann. Since everyone else tied for 4th place, a drawing was held to determine the order of choice of additional prizes donated by Frank Rink (reel, rod, leads, bait, anti-tangle sleeves) and by Jim Rink (beverage holders, caps, koozies). Chad Bettish chose the Daiwa Regal reel (that he gave to Larry Seeman). Fred Rhodes left with a Daiwa Maddragon rod in addition to some hats and beverage containers. Larry Seeman chose the inline leads (that he gave to Chad Bettisch). Jesus Gonzales won some artificial glugged corn and some anti-tangle sleeves. Eddie Cobb chose some Big Bob's corn and some caps. In addition to his other prizes, Cory Bohmann won some anti-tangle sleeves. Thanks, to all, for an enjoyable day! Joliet is due for a “long winter’s nap.” The venue wasn’t very productive this year as several of our tournaments were conducted with terrible water conditions. However, we had some outstanding anglers participate, and I thank you for your involvement. I hope to provide a few more opportunities next year. Looking forward to future events.--Frank Rink, Event Organizer Tough conditions, but three anglers emerge as victors at November 28, 2015 "Paul Wells Memorial Thanksgiving Weekend Tournament" at Joliet! As expected, water conditions for the November 28 Paul Wells Memorial Thanksgiving Carp Tournament were terrible. The recent snow melt and heavy rains of the previous two days, coupled with floating logs and other debris, made fishing nearly impossible in "unprotected" pegs. In fact, the water was so fast and dirty that I gave anglers the option at the 6:30 peg choice to opt out of the tournament. Several did. Nevertheless, a few of us made the commitment despite the poor prospects for catching any fish. The morning peg choice (in order of choice) was as follows: Chad Bettisch (peg 24E; moved to peg 9 at 11:30), Dennis Davis (peg 16), Mike Olinger (peg 26), Met Lika (peg 1), Jim Rink (peg 23), Larry Seeman (peg 27), Tony Stout (peg 30), Frank Rink (peg 9; moved to peg 17 at 11:30), Cory Bohmann (peg 8), Michal Gliksman (peg 22), Ioan "Jacob" Iacob (peg 21), Bogdan Bucur (peg 20). There were two groups that made wise choices on November 28. Group 1 consisted of those anglers who actually decided not to fish the tournament. Group 2 consisted of the three anglers who chose Jackson Street pegs. The rest of us from south of the Jefferson Street Bridge to the Cass Street bridge blanked. Mike Olinger (1st at peg 26) (pictured right), Tony Stout (2nd at peg 30) (pictured center with Christine photo-bombing over his shoulder), and Larry Seeman (3rd at peg 27) (pictured left) finished 1, 2, 3 in the tournament. Congratulations! The three winners also swept the special prizes! In addition to his first place finish ($180) with a total weight of 20-5 (5-6, 6-1, 8-14), Mike Olinger took the $45 side pot for most fish. Tony Stout's 10-15 caught at 10:57 a.m. won him 2nd place in the Big 4 event ($110), the sidepot for big fish ($50) and the Larry Seeman Surprise Bucket for first fish! Larry Seeman took the third place medal (and $70) with his catch of 10-7. He also won the Chad Bettisch 3M package for lowest total weight. The rest of us couldn't get a nibble anywhere south of Jackson St., although Dennis Davis landed a three pound catfish at peg 16. Thanks to all who attended. I'm sorry the bite and the "chocolate milk" water conditions were so bad, but congrats to Mike, Tony, and Larry for making the most of a difficult venue! This was the ninth year for this Thanksgiving Weekend Event! Winners have been: 2007: Paul Wells 2008: Mike Olinger 2009: Frank Rink 2010: Paul Wells 2011: Frank Rink 2012: Jim Rink 2013: Mike Woodworth (a.m.) and Cory Bohmann (p.m.) 2014: Chad Bettisch (a.m.) and Frank Rink (p.m.) 2015: Mike Olinger Lee Young hosts "Last Chance Tournament" on November 11, 2015 at Two Rivers, WI The bigger carp, for which Two Rivers, Wisconsin is well known, have probably taken up their winter residence in the depths of Lake Michigan, but anytime in mid-November when the water isn’t hard and white in NE Wisconsin is a good time to go carp fishing. We had a couple no-shows, but five anglers answered the bell for the “Last Chance” Big 3 Tournament held at the harbor in Two Rivers on Sunday, November 15. Lee Young, again, generously hosted the tournament, and he was joined by Carver Hansen, Dave Hubbard, Adam Schumacher, and Frank Rink. The morning’s peg draw at Leigh and Judy Stegemann’s M&M Restaurant resulted in Lee Young at peg 1 (he seems to always be great at peg drawing), Dave Hubbard at 2, Adam Schumacher at 3, Frank Rink at 4, and Carver Hansen at 5. We didn’t use much of the southwest portion of the venue as that shallower section doesn’t hold many fish when the water gets colder. And the water had gotten colder. Despite a pleasant day in which the air temperature reached the mid 50’s, Lee registered a water temperature of 39°! Carver Hansen started the day’s festivities with a 5+ pound carp from peg 5. That fish signaled a couple things for us: 1. Fish probably wouldn’t be that big at this tournament. 2. Most of the fish would probably come from the higher numbered pegs on the southwest side of the venue configuration. The “signal” proved correct. Most of the fish on November 15 came from pegs 5 and 4, and only two carp were caught that reached double digits (and fairly low double digits, at that). Nevertheless, it was a great day to be carp fishing and to be among some genuinely nice people, including several community residents who stopped by. Adam Schumacher and Lee Young had to get creative at their northeast pegs in order to capture their carp. The fall’s dying vegetation and the flow of the East Twin River had caused some thick mats to settle at the bottom of the harbor, causing bottom fishing to be nearly impossible. Adam put together some zig rigs, and even though the bites were few and far between, he was successful in landing two carp for the day that totaled about 14 pounds. Lee Young also had baits off the bottom, and he successfully netted two fish that totaled about 14 pounds. One was caught on a float rig and a long pole! Unfortunately, Dave Hubbard was pegged among the worst of the detritus. Even though it looked as if he had a big carp on the line every time he picked up a rod, the catch, every time, was five to ten pounds of lake weeds and grasses. Fewer weeds were found at pegs 5 and 4, and even though the fish were relatively small, they were able to more easily find the baits of Carver Hansen and Frank Rink. Carver and Frank probably caught ten or more fish each, and Carver had double runs twice. As the sun set on the 4:30 ending time, Frank Rink had luckily drawn a peg that held a slightly heavier group of Big 3 carp. His 16-14, 12-6, and 9-4 were good enough for a first place total of 38-8. Carver Hansen took home the second place purse with two 8+ pounders and a 7+ pounder totaling 24-12. It was an enjoyable day fishing in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. The Packer game traffic on I-43 made the trip home a bit crowded, but we all made it safely. Thanks, again, to Lee Young for providing the tournament opportunity! —Frank Rink Illinois Carp Fishing NEWS now on Facebook! After Jess Hackney suggested, at a recent tournament, that we could reach more potential contest participants through Facebook, I gave his idea some thought (Thanks, Jess!). After learning some Facebook procedures from my wife Kathy, I have added a page for Illinois Carp Fishing NEWS. Keep in mind that it is an "organization" page. I am unable to "Friend" or "Like" or post comments on your personal pages. However, the page does provide yet another source of information about catch-and-release carp fishing in Illinois and some surrounding states. --F.
